The Theme for AIDS Awareness Week 2011 is "HIV is still here"
This theme ‘HIV is Still Here’ is certainly true. Worldwide, more than 34 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2010In Australia, by the end of 2010:
- 30 486 cases of HIV infection had been diagnosed
- An estimated 21 391 people were living with diagnosed HIV infection
- In Australia over the last 5 years, the annual number of new HIV diagnoses was approximately 1000
- In South Australia, since last count, there have been 1,232 diagnoses of HIV
HIV/AIDS issues are relevant to the whole community, HIV does not discriminate and a diverse range of people are affected by HIV/AIDS. Whilst nationally in Australia HIV continues to be transmitted primarily through sexual contact between men, transmission of HIV through heterosexual contact has increased over recent years. In South Australia in 2010, for the first time, more than half the reported cases in SA involved heterosexual males.
As a community we need to talk about HIV/AIDS issues to improve support for people living with HIV and to prevent further infections. World AIDS Day and the week leading up to this event (AIDS Awareness Week) provide opportunities for discussing HIV/AIDS within the general community. |
